Union County achieved national acclaim for its innovative approach to developing the award-winning Yadkin Regional Water Supply Project, a nearly 20 year effort to secure a long-term sustainable water source for our land-locked community. The $300 million project included:

  • the new Yadkin River Water Treatment Plant;
  • a new water intake facility;
  • 30 miles of raw water pipeline; and
  • 10 miles of treated water pipeline.

To learn how these components were envisioned and constructed to comprise the Yadkin Regional Water Supply Project, watch this award-winning video:

County leadership held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new water treatment plant on September 21, 2023. Over the next few months, staff worked to finalize operations and prepare for distributing water from the plant to our customers. Water from the Yadkin Plant first entered our distribution system on Tuesday, February 13, 2024.
