INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. (Aug. 24, 2026) — An overflow within the Union County sanitary sewer system on Friday, Aug. 21, resulted in an estimated 1,300 gallons of wastewater entering Crooked Creek in the Yadkin-Pee Dee River Basin. The sanitary sewer overflow occurred from manholes near 4015 Sardis Church Road in Indian Trail.

Union County Water maintenance staff identified the overflow at approximately 7 p.m. Friday. Crews contained the overflow by 9:15 p.m.  

The overflow was not of the magnitude to cause immediate danger to the health of residents or the environment. All pipes, pumps and equipment were operating properly prior to the overflow. The overflow resulted from heavy rainfall.

Per regulatory requirements, the overflow has been reported to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.
