INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. (July 24, 2026) — Overflows within the Union County sanitary sewer system on Thursday, July 23, and Friday, July 24, resulted in an estimated 234,300 gallons of wastewater entering Crooked Creek in the Yadkin-Pee Dee River Basin. The sanitary sewer overflows occurred from manholes near 4015 Sardis Church Road in Indian Trail.

Union County Water maintenance staff identified the overflows at approximately 1 p.m. Thursday. Crews contained the overflows by 12 p.m. Friday. 

The overflows were not of the magnitude to cause immediate danger to the health of residents or the environment. All pipes, pumps and equipment were operating properly prior to the overflows. The overflows resulted from heavy rainfall.

Per regulatory requirements, the overflows have been reported to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.
