INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. (May 31, 2026) — Overflows within the Union County sanitary sewer system on Saturday, May 30, resulted in an estimated 36,000 gallons of wastewater entering Crooked Creek. The sanitary sewer overflows occurred from manholes near 4015 Sardis Church Road in Indian Trail.

Union County Water maintenance staff identified the overflows at approximately 9:50 a.m. on Saturday, May 30. Crews contained the overflows by 5:50 p.m.

Staff determined that the overflows were the result of significant rainfall leading to inflow and infiltration into the wastewater collection system.

The overflows were not of the magnitude to cause immediate danger to the health of residents or the environment. All pipes, pumps and equipment were operating properly prior to the overflows.

Per regulatory requirements, the overflow has been reported to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.

For more information, residents and customers may call Union County Water at 704-296-4210.
