An overflow within the Union County sanitary sewer system on Tuesday, April 7, resulted in an estimated 5,000 gallons of wastewater entering Twelve Mile Creek. The sanitary sewer overflow occurred near the intersection of Bentley Park Drive and Kensington Drive in Waxhaw.

The overflow was not of the magnitude to cause immediate danger to the health of residents or the environment. While the system was operating properly prior to the overflow, crews were working to repair a pipe break at the time the overflow occurred. Crews had taken the pipe out of service for repairs.

Per regulatory requirements, the overflow has been reported to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.
