Many Union County Water customers are reasonably concerned about anticipated power outages related to winter storms, and some customers are contacting our Customer Care team to ask whether they should anticipate losing water service if and when they lose power.
Union County Water plans for severe weather events and invests in infrastructure to ensure that we can maintain our services during a power outage. We want to share information that will help you know more about our operations and how you can best be prepared during a winter storm:
Will Union County Water’s services continue in a power outage?
Our water and wastewater plants are prepared to remain operational in the event of a power outage, due to our resiliency plans and our back-up generators.
What about my home? Will Union County Water customers lose water service due to a power outage?
If you lose power, this does not mean that you will lose water or wastewater service. Your home’s water and wastewater systems operate separately from your home’s electrical system. If you do lose water service during a winter storm, it’s likely due to frozen pipes in your home; review this information that may help you understand what happened and what to do.
I’ve read that I need water in my emergency supply kit. Is this not true?
Emergency management professionals recommend having water in your emergency supply kit and we encourage you to always follow their advice. You could fill your bathtub with water or buy bottled water to achieve the recommendation of having one gallon per person per day in your household’s emergency supply kit. However, you may find that having water on hand is typically not needed for customers on public water systems. If you fill up your bathtub with water, you can always use any unused water after the storm to water your plants, provide drinking water to your pets, or other uses.
What if I have a water or wastewater emergency during the storm?
Our after-hours crews are available to help with issues on our public system 24/7. For issues inside your home or on your side of your meter, you need to call your plumber. This page will help you determine whether to call Union County Water or your plumber.
In the unlikely event that one of our water or wastewater facilities loses power that results in a service disruption, we will contact affected customers using the information listed on their accounts. Please take a moment to make sure we have your updated contact information by using the webform on this page.
